Bruce Springsteen's keynote address at the South by Southwest festival Thursday in Austin, Texas saw him touch upon a wide range of topics. He entertained the crowd of 4,000 people for almost an hour with stories of his musical history, as well as giving advice to musicians of today. Highlights included:
- A listing of more than 50 different types of rock -- including "Nintendo-core" -- playing at the festival this week.
- Discussing how big of an influence The Animals were on his sound, which lead to him playing brief acoustic versions of "We Got to Get Out of this Place" and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," which he said inspired "Badlands."
- How he became interested in Woody Guthrie's legacy. He then lead a sing along of "This Land Is Your Land"
- A hysterical moment where he did a beatbox impression of Phil Spector's famous "Wall of Sound."
- He listed off acts that people might rave about -- like KISS, Pearl Jam and himself -- and said that a bunch of other people might respond with, "They suck!"
- His closing advice to young musicians was, "When you walk on stage tonight to bring the noise, treat it like it's all we have. And then remember, it's only rock and roll."
Last night's Springsteen and the E Street Band "secret" show that was only for South By Southwest attendees (who won tickets through a drawing) ended up being a taping for the next season of Austin City Limits at the Moody Theater. No word yet on when the episode will air.
